Dear Winter Surfers

September 17th, 2011

All good things come to an end, and this Saturday is the last “official” Surfing WA MLSLC session.  As advertised, the guys will be running an open informal fun competition to see how you measure up against each other, and yes I am told that there are prizes!!!!! (But never fear — there will be a parallel learning session as well).  Please note we may need a couple of volunteers to help judge the comp so volunteers welcome – (not much) experience needed!!.  Unfortunately the conditions are not going to be as great as they have been last couple of weeks — an onshore breeze this time, decent swell but possible showers.

Although the planned sessions are over, the great news is that Surfing WA have agreed to offer all Mullaloo SLSC participants the chance to to continue in one of their weekend classes as individuals but for $25 per lesson (the usual price is $35).  All the lessons from next week onwards will be at Trigg due to vehicle availability.   Weekend lessons start at 9am Saturday and Sunday and from October a 7am class will begin as well.

Thanks to Darryn and the crew for that, I am sure everyone agrees they have done a great job - please contact them to make arrangements direct using the details below.

I have also attached a great Surfing WA flyer for a great new national program called SurfGroms for 5 to 12yr olds, for those interested.

I am looking into continuing a week or two more myself, with fun sessions at Mullaz and possibly Lancelin — watch out for emails on this.

For all of you, social and competitors, I can’t recommend enough continuing with your surfing journey — I have been surfing for 40 years now and it has not harmed me, despite a couple of close calls!!.  For the kids in competition, it teaches wave sense and confidence and having just taken an age group through from 10s to 14s with great States results, I can confirm that it does wonders for their board skills in comps.

Watch out for more next week — Cheers Jeff

Want to STAR in a Surf Life Saving Ad this September?

August 15th, 2011

Surf Life Saving WA will be filming three TV commercials in early September and are looking for some local surf lifesavers to star in the ads. The commercials will form part of a major media campaign for Surf Life Saving WA over the summer months.

The surf lifesavers featured in the ad will be required to speak to camera and also perform some typical patrol duties i.e. a mock rescue, a First Aid treatment etc.

If you are interested in starring in the TV commercials all you need to do is head to the Surf Life Saving WA Facebook page and either record a video using a webcam or film and upload a short video (maximum 60 seconds).

Alternatively audition videos can be burnt to a DVD and posted to:

SLSWA TV Commercial
PO BOX 382
North Beach WA 6920

In the video you will need to state your name, age, club and talk about what Surf Life Saving means to you and what you enjoy about being a member.

To apply you will need to be:

  • a current member of a WA Surf Life Saving Club and an active patrolling surf lifesaver
  • over 18 as at September 1, 2011
  • available for filming between 5th to 9th September (in the Perth metro area)
  • confident, well spoken, be neat in appearance and be comfortable in front of a camera

The successful applicants will become the faces of Surf Life Saving WA over summer via the TV commercials and will need to be good representatives of our brand in the community.

Applications close Wednesday 24th August 2011.

For more information contact Maclain at SLSWA on 08 9243 9444 or email: mbruce@mybeach.com.au

A range of volunteer tasks includes:

Funds raised by the Relay for Life teams help the Cancer Council to:

  • Investigate new ways to prevent, detect and treat cancers
  • Educate people in our community about ways we can reduce our cancer risk
  • Advocate for cancer control and influence government policy
  • Support people during their times of greatest need with physical and emotion  assistance

Winter Surfing 2011

May 23rd, 2011

Our program for Winter Surfing 2011 open to all members. This year we have elected not to make the fun sessions a subscription series, but we will still be providing hot drinks and some club boards will be available as normal.  As usual Jeff will help out with basic surf tuition at the first sessions. Please could everyone note that although patrolling club members are always present, this is not an officially patrolled event nor is it a “drop and forget”, so the club cannot accept responsibility for the safety of attendees (Parents are responsible for their families).

The second half of the season will see a club tailored coaching program run by Surfing WA, “subject to interest”.  This is an all inclusive package inclusive of the provision of wetsuits and boards.  Additionally, everyone participating will be awarded a Certificate of Competence for their level reached over the program.  There is an option for a casual rate and that is highlighted in the schedule. Please would all those wishing to take this fantastic offer up please let Jeff Baker know as soon as possible by email to jeffnali@optusnet.com.au.

The core location remains Mullaloo North Point as usual, but we may vary the fun events in the early part of the program and as a first event, we are hoping to kick off, subject to weather conditions, at Lancelin Back Beach.  Further details will follow, but the (informal) plan is to take the club softboards up to Lancelin for a 10am start, surfing through to say 12.30 with a BBQ (bring your own food and drink) at 1pm onwards.  Afternoon will be “do your own thing” but we can recommend 4wd in the dunes, sandboarding (you can hire boards there) or Desert Storm (Google the website).

Cheers, Jeff Baker

Step Up for MS

May 4th, 2011

The Enerflex Step Up for MS is getting close and have invited Mullaloo Surf Life Saving Club members to get involved.

Enerflex Step up for MS

Registrations for 2011 are now open. Places are limited. So register today!
There is no better time than now to get involved — how many chocolate eggs did you eat this Easter?
Stair climbing burns about twice as many calories than any other sport or activity which is useful when:

- Just one hot cross bun with butter contains 358 calories (1,500 kilojoules) and can take a 45-min run to burn it off
- A 200g chocolate egg can take a three-hour jog to burn off

Register now!

If the health benefits aren’t enough to convince you to get involved…help us raise $120,000 for Western Australians living with MS.

Your generous support in raising funds to help those with MS allows us to offer a wide range of services to all our Members located across Western Australia. The MS Society of WA aims to assist everyone affected by MS to live their life to their full potential by providing valuable care and support.

What an accomplishment last year’s event was; 1,096 stairs and $110,000 raised to support people living with multiple sclerosis in WA.

3 ways to get involved:

Create a team — round up your friends, family, workmates or sporting group. It’s great fun taking the challenge with friends — each team can have up to 4 members
Join a team - join in an existing team and experience the challenge together. Both the team’s and each individual’s times will be recorded.
Register as an individual — prefer to go solo? Register here to conquer the vertical challenge on your own.

What? Where? When? How much?

Date: Sunday, 29 May, 2011
Where: Central Park, St Georges Terrace, Perth
Race time: from 8.00am (check website the week of the event for your own start time details)
Race packs: collect yours on the day
Distance: 53 flights, or 1096 stairs to the top
Record: 5 minutes and 25 seconds by Paul Crake

Online registration fees:
Adults: $35
Juniors (12–17 yrs): $25
MS Adult Members: $30
MS Junior Members: $20
