State Champs for the Boaties
Our U19 Stormbringers trumped their semi-final in 1st place
Our U19 Stormbringers trumped their semi-final in 1st place
Saturday 16th saw a condensed schedule at the Surf Boat arena for day 1 of the surf lifesaving state championships.
It started early with the surf boats kicking things off in the Lifesaver relay.
Mullaloo provided 2 teams with the U19 Mermaids assisting their team to 6th place & gaining valuable points.
With the forecast all day showing minimal swell & offshore winds, this made for hard work in the flat water conditions.
We then turned our attention to the U19 & U23 age categories.
U19 male final – Mullaloo Stormbringers finished 2nd place
U19 female final – Mullaloo Mermaids finished 2nd place
Mullaloo Makos finished 5th place
U23 male final – Mullaloo Minerz finished 5th place
U23 female final – Mullaloo Usain Boat finished 4th place
All claiming valuable points for the club, complemented with some silverware!
Next up was the Surf Boat relay with 3 crews (1 x U19, 1 x open male, 1 x open female).
Mullaloo had the luxury of providing 2 teams (Gold & Blue), unfortunately both teams missing a place in the final & finishing 5th & 6th respectively.
With the individual (Beach& Surf) Masters already completed 2 weeks ago, it was the surf boat fraternity to take centre stage.
Mullaloo started their campaign in the 180 (min. combined rowers age) female category, with the Marlins taking 3rd place & Freebooters close behind in 4th.
180 Male category
The Gents finished 2nd place
160 Male category
Rebels finished 4th place
All taking valuable masters points.
Sunday 17th – Day 2.
The overnight SW winds didn’t ease on Sunday with the swell picking up also. This changed the race plan for all crews taking part in the Opens & Reserves categories.
Usain Boat competed in the female open division & rounded out their day in 6th place.
Mermaids, Marlins & Freebooters took part in the female reserve division with The Mermaids & Marlins making the finals.
Marlins finished 6th place
Mermaids finished 4th place, but finished with all smiles after beating their nemesis, Sorrento.
The Male reserves saw 19 crews across WA take part over 3 rounds, after which it was culled to 2 x 6 crew semi-finals & 1 x 6 crew final.
Minerz & Rebels narrowly missed out on a semi-final berth, but our U19 Stormbringers trumped their semi-final in 1st place, then rounding out the day in the final finishing in 2nd place!
For most now, we take a short break prior to winter training & the Albany Challenge in June. But the Stormbringers will continue their sprint work in the lead up to the Aussies in 4 weeks’ time. Good luck boys!
