Happy (Youth) Campers

After an early start at Mullaloo Beach, our 26 youth campers headed off to Boshack Outback near Toodyay. It was a somewhat peaceful bus trip arriving at camp mid-morning, to be greeted by Matt, the camp guide for the next few days. Matt was energetic and engaging and lead the campers on a hike across the property, meeting the animals and learning about the natural wonders of the area. Arriving back at the camp, the highlight of the very hot afternoon was canoeing on the Lake. Lots of capsized canoes and loads of fun. Roast lamb for dinner was a winner, followed by table tennis and time around the camp fire, with a digeridoo and of course marshmallows.

Day 2 started with early morning yoga, led by Matt. Only the mum’s attended. Was it because the Youth had such a late night? Who knows! The mums were grateful for the peaceful morning. Breakfast – whoa – who knew these kids could eat so much? They all had plenty of energy for the days activities. A survivor challenge included some first aid – snake bite education, raft building and shelter building, while following the clues to the next activity. Teams created secret handshakes, there was hair braiding (for the boys) and of course more time on the lake. In the evening, after mountains of lasagne, we had the inaugural surf cap challenge game, the chocolate game and table tennis. Simon, a local paramedic amazed us all with his anecdotes of the universe before we headed out to look through telescopes at the stars. We saw Saturn, and it was incredible.

Day 3 was a slow start with some very tired youth (boys). Chilling out in anyway they wanted, after cleaning out their huts, the youth were soon back on the bus and heading back to Mullaloo.  Maddie from SLSWA delivered the Youth Officials course to all the camp attendees. We finished the camp off with a game of Railway Riot, with chocolates for the winners.

A shout out to Paul, MJ, Paula, Kylie and Sarah for joining me on the camp, and to Dawn who met us back at the club with some yummy afternoon tea. Thank you to all the Youth who joined us – you were awesome.
