2022 SunSmart WA Endurance Championships
Some amazing results came from the weekends State Endurance Competition, despite the terribly cold & rough conditions.
Some amazing results came from the weekends State Endurance Competition, despite the terribly cold & rough conditions.
Six Mullaloo crews participated – Usain Boat (Open Female), SeaGals (Masters Female), Stormbringers (U19 in Open Male) and Wizards (Open Male) competed back-to-back weekends. Additional crews were created by combining eligible Little Mermaids and Misfits to form Mullaloo’s Merfits (U19, competing in Open Female), and pooling male rowers to form Team Fisky (Masters Male).
The 7.5 km course started and finished on the water off Mullaloo Beach. (Those of you who saw our efforts the previous weekend may have noticed this differs from the “jump in”-style race starts of short courses). Unfavourable weather with howling SE winds generated plenty of additional work at the final stage of the race. Unpleasant but equally affecting all, fortune favoured those who had prepared physically and as a crew.
Mullaloo medalled in one event with SeaGals (Clare Ketteringham, Bec Millar, Ria McBennett, Annika Crockford, Sweep Darren Protzman) finishing second in the Masters Female division. Well done ladies! They want to thank their sweep Darren for setting up a brilliant retic system to keep those sliding seats wet over 7.5 km and for keeping them fired up at the later stages of the race. He knows what they mean.
Honourable mentions go to Usain Boat for really giving Scarboro Diamonds a run for their money throughout the race, the Merfits for taking it to the Opens Ladies and finishing 6th, and the Stormbringers for another consistently strong performance against their Opens rivals, finishing 5th. Sweep Steve Part credits his young crew with a perfect start, and a battle cry of “Sha-Boom!” to finish strong and close behind our Wizards. The efforts and results of all crews who participated generated points towards our clubs Championship Tally. Well done everyone.
Our volunteers did the Club proud on Saturday – Boaties Captain Richard Calnon extends his gratitude to Jacqui McGregor, Guy Edwards, Will Ketteringham and Nathan Vartesi for course set-up, pack-up and water safety. A big thank you to Sandy Clarke for organising a popular and memorable event. Thanks to all the boaties who helped with traffic management and boat logistics and to Stu Ketteringham and Paul Beattie for supplying this week’s photos.
When can you see the boaties next? Mullaloo will be competing at City Beach on the 12th of November. Stay tuned for more exciting news and results as our season progresses.
