Algal Bloom concerns and reporting

14.03.2024 News

Hi Everyone

It was wonderful to see the Nippers participate in their State Championships last weekend. They represented us well in the water and on the beach (with their performance, attitude and behaviour),

We were, as always, very well represented on the side via our Officials and water safety. Thank you to all those who were involved.

This weekend we do it all again, but for the last time this season with the Open and Youth State Championships at Scarborough

A few recent items for interest:

Algal Bloom concerns and reporting

Mullaloo SLSC have been working with the City of Joondalup to confirm actions that need to be taken in order to close Mullaloo Beach, in the event of detection of Algal Bloom. Whilst State Government agencies are ultimately responsible, a procedure is being put in place for patrol captains to report sightings of algae or similar biological substances to these agencies for them to collect samples and provide further direction.

If any member makes a sighting outside patrol hours, that they wish to report independently, please take a photo with an estimate time and location and email to and .

Board News

Board of Director representatives have met with Caitlin Collins, our State MLA, to discuss how she can support the club operations and infrastructure going forward. We discussed concerns with the condition of the ocean and moving forward potential building projects that might support and or extend the refurbishment of the downstairs bathrooms, and others that might enhance our clubrooms upstairs.

Radio upgrade. The Club has been working with SLSWA to dual fund the upgrade and installation a new radio repeater in the Club tower. Through a set of antennae on top of the main tower roof, this will overcome a previous blackspot and allow for full operational coverage and reduce congestion issues on our beach and beyond.

Retail shop. Various areas of the club met recently to discuss our important retail shop. We discussed and planned for the years ahead, with a proposed commitment to extending the range of ‘essential’ (as different to casual / social) items sold at cost; incentives to support members buying club gear; plans for a new club shirt(s); and the importance of protecting our style and brand guide.

Good Luck to all at Open and Youth State Championships this weekend.

The State Championship season culminates this weekend with the Open and Youth events. All the best to all competitors. As always – do you best and have fun. In doing so please remember the message from SLSWA, as below:

Over the last few weeks, in the lead up and at a number of our events, we have had instances of unacceptable behaviour with our staff and officials at the receiving end. The poor behaviour has been demonstrated by parents and Nippers themselves.

All members are to abide by the SLSA Codes of Conduct as well as the SLSWA Conduct and Behaviour Guide contained in the Little Nipper & Nipper Competition Guide. https://s3.ap-southeast-2.amazonaws.com/assets.surflifesavingwa.com.au/app/uploads/2021/03/21204943/2023-24_SLSWA_LittleNipper_Nipper_CompGuide_FINAL.pdf

If necessary, we will stop a Nipper from competing, if we deem their behaviour as inappropriate. In terms of adults, they will be asked to leave the arena and will not be permitted back in. Clubs are asked to assist and support our measures in this regard.

See you around.

Regards Andy
