Beach Management

Basic Beach Management – Silver Medallion

The aim of this course is to pre­pare can­di­dates for work as a Patrol Cap­tain, Team Leader, Duty Cap­tain and sim­i­lar roles. The Basic Beach Man­age­ment (Sil­ver Medal­lion) course is usu­ally con­ducted for a group of surf life­sav­ing clubs, to enable shar­ing of expe­ri­ences and issues and con­tribute to the learn­ing of the whole group.

Course prerequisites

  • Finan­cial mem­ber of Mul­laloo Surf Life Sav­ing Club
  • Min­i­mum 17 years of age on the day of assess­ment
  • Pro­fi­cient in the SLSA Bronze Medal­lion

OR

  • Have held the SLSA Bronze Medal­lion and be cur­rently pro­fi­cient in any SLSA award

Course organisation

The course is con­ducted in three (3) parts:

  1. Ini­tial intro­duc­tion ses­sion – between one (1) and two (2) hours
  2. Per­sonal study, research and com­ple­tion of a Work­book – over three (3) to four (4) weeks
  3. Course Work­shop – approx­i­mately five (5) hours – to review per­sonal work, and share learn­ings and com­pete a series of desk­top exer­cises

Course outcomes

Com­ple­tion of this course will enable you to:

  • Describe beach man­age­ment respon­si­bil­i­ties
  • Describe the respon­si­bil­i­ties of oth­ers in related roles
  • Iden­tify and apply rel­e­vant leg­is­la­tion (Acts and Reg­u­la­tions) and Local Laws (Local Gov­ern­ment Author­ity By-Laws)
  • Be respon­si­ble for your own safety and the safety of oth­ers
  • Oper­ate com­mu­ni­ca­tions equip­ment
  • Fol­low oper­at­ing pro­ce­dures
  • Plan and man­age the response to emer­gen­cies
