Pain Management

The Pain Man­age­ment Course (PM) is con­ducted through the surf life­sav­ing club – check the web­site for the Edu­ca­tion Cal­en­dar and reg­is­ter your inter­est with the club office.

Course prerequisites

  • Finan­cial mem­ber of Mul­laloo Surf Life Sav­ing Club
  • Age at least 17 years of age on the date of final assess­ment
  • Hold, and be cur­rently pro­fi­cient in the fol­low­ing SLSA awards: Apply (Senior) First Aid, Advanced Resus­ci­ta­tion Tech­niques Cer­tifi­cate
  • Be approved to com­plete the cer­tifi­cate by the Man­ager Life­sav­ing.

Course introduction

The aim of the Pain Man­age­ment Cer­tifi­cate course is to develop the knowl­edge and skills to admin­is­ter inhal­able anal­ge­sia (pain reliev­ing) med­ica­tion in accor­dance with SLSWA pro­to­cols and the require­ments of the SLSWA Poi­sons Per­mit.

Course outcomes

By the end of this course, the can­di­date should be able to:

  • Assess the casu­alty and develop a man­age­ment plan
  • Check inhal­able anal­ge­sia equip­ment
  • Iden­tify and respond to con­tra-indi­ca­tions for the admin­is­tra­tion of inhal­able anal­ge­sia
  • Seek and gain per­mis­sion for admin­is­tra­tion from the patient, or a per­son with legal respon­si­bil­ity for the patient
  • Set up the inhaler device
  • Provide appro­pri­ate instruc­tions for use to the patient
  • Mon­i­tor the admin­is­tra­tion and use of the inhal­able anal­ge­sia
  • Doc­u­ment (record) the admin­is­tra­tion of the inhal­able anal­ge­sia, includ­ing effects and any side effects
  • Provide appro­pri­ate han­dover to ambu­lance per­son­nel.


Can­di­dates will be assessed for com­pe­tence in the fol­low­ing ways:

  • Com­ple­tion of the Pain Man­age­ment Work­book
  • Com­pe­tence demon­strated in prac­ti­cal (skills) sce­nar­ios


  • Resources can be obtained from the Mem­bers Por­tal
