IRB Crew

Inflatable Rescue Boat Crew Certificate

This course pro­vides the oppor­tu­nity for mem­bers to develop skills and knowl­edge required to be a safe and effec­tive crew per­son in an inflat­able res­cue boat (IRB).

Course prerequisites

  • Finan­cial mem­ber of Mul­laloo Surf Life Sav­ing Club
  • Min­i­mum of 15 years of age on the date of final assess­ment
  • Hold, and be cur­rently pro­fi­cient in the SLSA Bronze Medal­lion

Course length

Esti­mate between four (4) to six (6) weeks, depen­dent on rate of acqui­si­tion of the required knowl­edge and skills

  • The­ory pro­gram on a week­night – two (2) hours
  • Skills devel­op­ment ses­sions on both days of the week­end – for approx­i­mately four (4) hours

Course outcomes

By the end of this course, can­di­dates will be able to:

  • Under­stand the role and respon­si­bil­i­ties of an IRB Crew­per­son
  • Describe the duties of an IRB Crew­per­son
  • Describe the safety con­sid­er­a­tions when crew­ing an IRB
  • Per­form IRB res­cues as part of the IRB team

Crew an IRB

  • Dif­fer­en­ti­ate between the dif­fer­ent classes of IRBs
  • Iden­tify the com­po­nents of an IRB and its ancil­lary equip­ment
  • Con­tribute to the safe and effi­cient launch­ing of an IRB
  • Demon­strate safe crew­ing posi­tions while nego­ti­at­ing the surf
  • Per­form emer­gency pro­ce­dures
  • Per­form rel­e­vant obser­va­tions, haz­ards and risks and ensure these are com­mu­ni­cated to the Dri­ver in a clear and timely man­ner

Main­tain an IRB

  • Per­form pre-oper­a­tional checks and rel­e­vant pre­ven­ta­tive main­te­nance of the IRB hull
  • Per­form rel­e­vant post-oper­a­tional main­te­nance of the IRB hull
  • Report major wear, dam­age or other issues asso­ci­ated with the res­cue-readi­ness state of the craft accord­ing to organ­i­sa­tion pro­ce­dures
  • Per­form res­cues in an IRB as a Crew­per­son
  • Per­form con­scious and uncon­scious casu­alty pick-ups, within and behind the surf break
  • Per­form com­plex res­cues includ­ing swim­ming res­cues, sail­boarder and kite surfer res­cues



Mem­bers are required to requal­ify this award annu­ally. Requal­i­fi­ca­tions take around 1–2 hours to com­plete and are con­ducted at the club.

  • This course is typ­i­cally con­ducted out of the Patrol Sea­son (win­ter months) – in order to take bet­ter advan­tage of equip­ment avail­abil­ity and range of surf con­di­tions.
