Gold Medallion

The aim of this course is to provide par­tic­i­pants with advanced knowl­edge and skills to man­age emer­gency sit­u­a­tions autonomously.

Course prerequisites

  • Finan­cial mem­ber of Mul­laloo Surf Life Sav­ing Club
  • Be at least 17 years of age on the date of final assess­ment
  • Com­plete an 800 metres swim in 14 min­utes or less, in a swim­ming pool of no less than 25m length
  • Cur­rent Bronze Medal­lion (and hold the Cer­tifi­cate II in Pub­lic Safety (Aquatic Res­cue))
  • Cur­rent Advanced Resus­ci­ta­tion Tech­niques Cer­tifi­cate
  • Cur­rent Apply (Senior) First Aid
  • Cur­rent Sil­ver Medal­lion – Basic Beach Man­age­ment

Course outcomes

On suc­cess­ful com­ple­tion of this course, par­tic­i­pants will be able to:

  • Per­form com­plex patient res­cue and sup­port, aided and unaided by equip­ment
  • Select appro­pri­ate res­cue equip­ment
  • Assess and man­age a patient’s lev­els of dis­tress
  • Sup­port and return patients to shore
  • Per­form a one-per­son drag tech­nique and patient lay
  • Per­form a surf skills and fit­ness test: 
    • Com­plete a 400 metres swim, 800 metres run, 400 metres board pad­dle and 800 metres run in less than 25 min­utes
    • Com­plete a tube res­cue of a patient 100 metres out at sea and return (swim fins optional)
    • Com­plete a board res­cue of a patient 200 metres out at sea and return
  • Work autonomously
  • Plan and under­take work activ­i­ties
  • Accept respon­si­bil­i­ties
  • Set per­for­mance require­ments
  • Main­tain team per­for­mance


Course dates

  • Courses, and assess­ments are con­ducted on request
  • Assess­ment can be one-on-one with a SLSWA approved Asses­sor
  • All the pre­req­ui­sites must be held, and cur­rent before apply­ing for the assess­ment
