Assessor Certificate

The Surf Life Sav­ing WA Asses­sor Course pro­vides surf life­sav­ing club mem­bers with the oppor­tu­nity to obtain knowl­edge and skills that will assist in plan­ning and organ­is­ing assess­ment processes, as well as assess­ing the com­pe­tence of can­di­dates. Suc­cess­ful com­ple­tion of this course and the asso­ci­ated Log­book, enti­tles can­di­dates to obtain the award of WA Asses­sor in the cho­sen award.

Course prerequisites

  • Finan­cial mem­ber of Mul­laloo Surf Life Sav­ing Club
  • Be at least 18 years of age on the date of final assess­ment
  • Be cur­rently pro­fi­cient in the award for which the ASS award is sought
  • Have com­pleted the Asses­sor course coor­di­nated by SLSWA

OR

  • Suc­cess­fully gain Recog­ni­tion of Prior Learn­ing (RPL)
  • Have held the TO Cer­tifi­cate in the award for at least one  sea­son AND have taken the lead role in the train­ing of one group for that award. 

Course outcomes

  • Plan and organ­ise the assess­ment process
  • Assess the com­pe­tence of can­di­dates
  • Doc­u­ment the out­comes of assess­ment, includ­ing demon­stra­tion of com­pleted records
  • Par­tic­i­pate in an assess­ment val­i­da­tion
  • Recog­nise cur­rent qual­i­fi­ca­tions and/or com­pe­ten­cies within the lim­its of the ASS role

This path­way allows can­di­dates who can estab­lish that they hold rel­e­vant and cur­rent qual­i­fi­ca­tions within the edu­ca­tion sec­tor to become Surf Life Sav­ing WA Asses­sors with­out attend­ing the face-to-face course. These can­di­dates are required to provide cer­ti­fied evi­dence of their rel­e­vant and cur­rent qual­i­fi­ca­tions to qual­ify for this path­way. Suc­cess­ful appli­cants will be required to assess a num­ber course under super­vi­sion of a qual­i­fied SLSWA Asses­sor and com­plete the asso­ci­ated Log­book.

Exam­ples of rel­e­vant evi­dence:

  • Uni­ver­sity edu­ca­tion degree (bach­e­lor degree, diploma, etc.)
  • Cer­tifi­cate IV (or higher) in Train­ing and Assess­ment
  • Enter­prise Train­ing Units of Com­pe­tency State­ment of Attain­ment (from the Cer­tifi­cate IV in Train­ing and Assess­ment)
  • Cur­rent WACOT card
  • Cur­rent employ­ment within a TAFE or uni­ver­sity as a Lec­turer or Tutor

NOTE: Copies of evi­dence pro­vided to Surf Life Sav­ing WA must be ver­i­fied

If you feel con­fi­dent you already have some or all of the com­pe­ten­cies deliv­ered in this mod­ule, ask your Facilitator/Assessor for a copy of the RPL Infor­ma­tion Kit which includes a Self-Assess­ment Check­list for the course. You can check your­self by com­plet­ing self-assess­ment.

Requalification

Atten­dance at an annual Trainer and Asses­sor Forum/Workshop/Conference is required to main­tain cur­rency of this award.

Course dates

  • The Asses­sor Cer­tifi­cate course is run by SLSWA at their train­ing rooms in Bal­catta.
  • The course is usu­ally offered once or twice per year in July-Sep­tem­ber
