President’s Message

Wednesday, September 18th, 2019

We are almost at the start of a new summer season and activities have slowly been increasing over the last few weeks. It has been fantastic to see the beach returning to a busy state, with new Bronze and SRC courses starting, the IRB drivers course progressing well, and of course the many different training groups – it really showcases ‘One Club’. It won’t be long until the patrol season is upon us again.

The Board have been busy over the last few months putting the finishing touches to the updated strategic plan which will be communicated to members very soon. As part of this update, the Board have made a preemptive update to the organisational structure in readiness for the start of the new season. We have added several new roles including:

  • Water Safety Manager – working within the Operations portfolio to coordinate and manage water safety needs for the Club to alleviate the load on the Lifesaving Manager
  • General Manager Facilities – to oversee and coordinate the management of our facility.

As part of this change, John Hillen as Finance Manager will report directly to the Board as will Jen and Karen in the office.

Position descriptions for these new roles are currently in development and we would encourage anyone who has an interest to assist, to contact either myself or the office in the interim for further information.

Whilst we are close to the start of the season, we are still searching high and low for a Woodside Nippers Manager to work with the committee to ensure the youngest members of our Club get the best experience we can give them. We also need a General Manager Marketing to oversee our Marketing portfolio. Additionally, after many years in the role, Jesper Rasmussen has decided to step down as Facilities Manager and we’d like to thank him wholeheartedly for all his efforts over those years. This then opens up the Facilities Manager position looking after the day-to-day management of our building. If you, or anyone you know, are able to assist with these roles, please contact the office to express your interest.

To enable the Club to function effectively the Board have also defined several committees that will be in place this year:

  • Building committee – to look at options, define plans and costs for key projects, including the redevelopment of the upstairs toilets, fitting out of the balcony area and redevelopment/expansion of our downstairs areas
  • Policy committee – to review current bylaws and policies, defining clear and simple policies for the Club and members
  • Risk and Governance committee – to ensure the Club is aware of, managing and eliminating risks appropriately along with ensuring compliance with applicable governance requirements.

If you feel you have any experience or expertise in the areas above, we’d love to hear from you! Please contact the office.

Before the season starts, I’d like to take this opportunity to remind everyone it is against our policies to allow non-members access to the downstairs change rooms and gym – these facilities are a benefit of Club membership. Your membership fees contribute to the cleaning, maintenance and insurance costs and cover, paid for by the Club, which is no different to any other private facility. Updates will be implemented over the next few months to assist with monitoring these environments.

Whilst the Club bar has been open all over the winter period, events are now starting to happen to wake members up from their hibernation. Chase the Ace is well underway with a current jackpot of just under $1,000 – come down every Friday night for your chance to win. The AFL Grand Final will be live in the lounge on Saturday 28 September, quickly followed by the NRL Grand Final on Sunday 06 October. As a pre-season function we also have an Oktoberfest celebration on Friday 11 October – bring your best lederhosen! Come down, share some food from Swell and the company of your families and fellow clubbies and have some fun at these events whilst supporting the Club.

There is, and will be, so much going on at the Club, if you are unsure what is available, please check our website, the newsletter, social media or just ask one of the management team when you see them (their pictures are on the board inside the boatshed and in the Club lounge).

Patrolling members get ready to dust off your uniforms, I’ll see you on the beach soon.

There has been a huge body of research and evidence around the connection between what we eat and how we feel and function.  It is now understood, that the gut, and specifically the bacteria in the gut, help to create and regulate important hormones and enzymes which directly impact our mood and wellbeing.  Basically, it is like everything else in life, the quality of what you put in, directly impacts the quality of what you get out and how long our bodies can work efficiently without succumbing to disease.  Check out this article for a simple yet important message which might make you change your mind about what your next meal may be or at least will help you understand and track the impact your food choices are having on your wellbeing.
