From Ocean Surf to Avon Rapids

Several members braved the flowing conditions of the Avon Descent over the weekend of 4–5 August, trading their surf skills for the river rapids. We believe the river did not disappoint… well, condition wise. As for some craft, perhaps not fairing as well!

wesTop effort from first timer Wes Gould who took out the Single Open Ski event in a time of 08:35:09. An outstanding achievement amongst some very talented paddlers. Wes has been training for some months now and had support from Glenn Eldon who Wes says he “would not have even got to the start line without”. Wes had a great support crew with the both his own family and the Eldon family, keeping him on track. Wes also thanks Finn Kayaks for supplying the ski that he trained and raced in.

troyTroy Baird, Paul Brierley and Tim Buytels who have been spotted many mornings braving the chill in Hillarys marina in preparation for the Avon were at the ready for the Avon. Troy teamed up with his mate Brad and in a time of 9.14.56 came 7th overall in the Team of 2 division – Craft not so fortunate and suffered heavily, not sure if the gaffa tape was the heavy bit though! Paul had a tough run in the Single Marathon Kayak division a top first day effort but it seems the rapids got the better of him in the 2nd day. Tim had a hard slog in the Single Spec Ski division at a time of 11.51.46 but managed 3rd place for his effort!

bubbleBubble Wrap – 160s male surf boat crew of Stuart Clarke, Carl Priestly, Martin Fisk, Edgar Coello and swept by Steve Part – the gents came 2nd in the inaugural 15km Avon Surf Craft Challenge – likening the effort up stream at 57mins to an uphill challenge, given it took them only 33mins to return (7.5km one way and then back)! Well done.
