IRB Racing Team Flying High

The IRB Racing team commenced preseason in October with the goal of defending last year’s Series Championship. This year we restructured our coaching group and put together an extensive program that concentrated on strength and conditioning, combined with a swim program and sprint sessions. This then lead us into a new format of training in the IRBs to maximise the sessions to achieve the best outcome. The program was developed and run by multiple voluntary club members who have put in a massive amount of work to prepare the group. The group embraced the new format and with great commitment the results have been transferred into their performances this year.

The group have dominated all three carnivals this season with significant points victories over their components. The most pleasing results have come in the teams consistency with multiple teams making finals in each of the events in the first 3 rounds. As the State Titles approached the team moved its focus into fine tuning their skills and making sure all equipment and personnel were prepared to the best of their ability. Even after a long preseason and weather interrupted season that contained multiple strong cold fronts, the focus and commitment was as strong as ever. One of the biggest attributes of the team and its group of supporters is its ability to have fun no matter what task is at hand. That enthusiasm and focus was taken into the State Championships.

The States presented us with a great day with good weather and a nice swell to keep the spectators happy. The State Titles consisted of 9 events in the open and female categories. Mullaloo was dominant winning 8 of these 9 events. Once again the strength of the team was ability to get multiple teams into the finals of these events. The team worked together brilliantly and their commitment to each other is one of the contributing factors in their success. In addition to this the male Mullaloo A crew won the Dave Clark Shield for the best male team of the season. This is the 3rd consecutive year they have taken this honour. Not to be outdone Mullaloo A female crew also took out their shield for the best female team of the season. The performance of the team throughout the year and at the state titles consolidated them as the club to beat with the winning of the series Championship for the second consecutive season.

The focus now turns to the preparation of an assault at the national level. This year the IRB Racing Aussies are held in Thirroul, NSW 13–15 of July.

We wish the team every success in their National Competition and congratulate all members as well as some of them making the Western Suns Representative Team. To all the support team around the IRB Racing Squad, from soup mums to warm hugs; from swim efforts to lift efforts; from set ups to pack ups, from officiating finishes to water safety corralling, from squeals of delight to tears of triumph; you are all hugely important and appreciated as part of the success!
