Surf League Wrap-up

On Sunday 4 February, the 3rd and last Surf League competition was run at Sorrento Beach. The Surf League is a new competition format introduced by SLSWA covering 3 carnivals held in December, January and February. The format of the Surf League is for Clubs to provide teams of Male and Female Surf Boat Crews, Water and Beach competitors up to a max of 20 people per team. Competitors then race in a number of team and individual events across Surfboats, Water and the Beach. Points are awarded for places 1 – 6. There is only one division of competition for all teams who compete in an open age group. Some of the highlights of the competition is the live Webcast of the competition and significant prizes for winning competitors and Clubs.

Mullaloo SLSC put together 2 teams (Gold and Blue) for each carnival. We had quite young teams at the moment with only a few open competitors. This meant we were able to use the carnivals for developing athletes and surfboat teams including U/15, U/17 and U/19 competitors. Overall we managed to use 5 different Boat crews and 30 different beach and water competitors.

Mullaloo did extremely well considering that we had few open competitors available to compete in our team. Some of our major results from the three competitions included:

1st Swim – Jack Wilson (U/17)

2nd Ironwoman – Soraya Lee (U/19)

3rd Ironman – Wes Gould (Open – 0nly attended 2 carnivals)

A special mention to Jack Wilson who also made the Western Suns Open Elite team to travel to Cronulla and compete at the Ocean6 carnival.
