Education Update 28–11-17

Thank you to all who have assisted in the Skills Maintenance program during November. The season has been a busy one for the Assessor and Trainer team, many of whom have contributed to several sessions. There were two sessions held at the club and a third at Lancelin during November. A final Skills Maintenance session will be held on Saturday 16 December, with IRB commencing at 7am and BM/SRC/ART at 9.30am. Any member who cannot attend this final opportunity should realise they will be unable to patrol, or compete, after 31 December, 2017. We are aware of a few members who, for health reasons, will be unable to complete proficiency before the end of the year – they should email the Education team to let us know, so suitable arrangements can be made when they gain medical clearance to resume surf lifesaving activities.

Assessment Time

Two Bronze Medallion groups as well as the Advanced Resuscitation Techniques group all start their assessments this week with preliminary checks before proceeding to their final assessments next week. Thank you to the hard-working training teams and especially to the members who have made the commitment to join our patrol groups.

January Bronze Medallion/Surf Rescue Certificate course

The course is filling fast – so members wishing to participate should register online @Revolutionise. The 400m qualifying swim will be held before Christmas – details will be advised next week. On successful completion of the qualifying swim, participants will receive their training resources, which will enable them to be able to commence their online training with the objective of completing it before the first day of the course (Tuesday, 2 January 2018).

IRB Crewperson course

Powercraft training begins next weekend with the first of a series of IRB Crewperson courses. The IRB Crew course is a great next step following on from the Bronze Medallion. IRBC 1 (Register) still has spaces so please register your interest as soon as possible. Up to eight (8) trainees will form the course group. It is planned to offer further IRBC courses at approximately one month intervals – so choose the one that suits your availability and register. Note that IRBC 2 course (January) is already full, however, there are still places on IRBC 3 (Register) in February. We have a new team of Trainee Trainers who are keen to assist members in gaining this award. Welcome to our new Trainers in the Powercraft area.

Pain Management course

Two courses have been scheduled – Monday 18 December (Register) and Wednesday 20 December (Register). This award now has to be renewed annually (has previously been every two years). Few nominations have been received to date – it would be great to see more people register. There is some pre-course work so early registration is needed to give participants sufficient time to complete this before attending the one evening course.

Nipper Rescue Certificate (NRC)

The NRC programe will resume in January, with NRC 3 being scheduled for Saturday 20 January from 8am to 11am, then NRC 4 on Sunday 21 January from 12 noon to 3pm. Hopefully this will enable the remaining people who have expressed interest to attend. Each course will have up to 24 members. Register your interest via the Courses email.

Bronze Medallion Course 4 (BM 4)

A fourth Bronze Medallion course has been scheduled to commence on Monday 5 February at 7pm, with Saturday and Sunday morning training being between 7am and 9am each weekend. The course will run for a minimum of six (6) weeks, up to eight (8) weeks. The course completion date depends on the rate of acquisition of the required knowledge and skills.

Planning ahead…

  1. It is proposed to commence the annual Skills Maintenance program in July 2018, with a focus on Dry/Land skills. These will be run every month until November. Wet/Water skills will commence in October (weather permitting). Dates will be posted soon to enable you to plan ahead.
  2. Members wishing to become a Trainer should send an Expression of Interest to Education email so planning can commence.
  3. Members wishing to gain their Silver Medallion – Beach Management should send an Expression of Interest to Courses email so planning can commence.
