Development Clinic a Success!

Wednesday, September 20th, 2017

The City of Joondalup provided a grant to be utilised by Sorrento and Mullaloo Surf Clubs to aid in the development of athletes and coaches.

Andrew Ridley utilised part of the grant to run pool rescue clinics leading up to Interstates and also flew to Adelaide to further develop his coaching skills in this area. He will pass on what he has learned to athletes and coaches in this discipline.

The remainder of the money was used to fly Ironman/woman Tanyn Lyndon and Devon Halligan over to Perth to run clinics for athletes, coaches and age group managers from both surf clubs.

Devon and Tanyn were exceptional and passed on so much enthusiasm, energy and knowledge onto up and coming athletes and coaches. We were extremely fortunate that the weather was amazing and Mullaloo turned on a wave over the weekend, which made training even more exciting and assisted in the acquisition of numerous skills.

A board session was held for U14 — Open athletes and coaches on Friday evening, followed by a talk to age group managers and coaches.

Saturday began with a junior skills session u11 — u13, followed by a BBQ lunch at Sorrento. In the afternoon a skills session for U14 — open was held at Mullaloo, Devon and Tanyn began this session with a stretching and rolling demonstration, which was of great value to athletes and coaches.

Saturday evening saw a dinner for athletes who had attended 2016 Aussies, they had the opportunity to talk to Tanyn and Devon.

Sunday started at 7.30 am with an u14 — open ironman session, followed by a junior ironman session at Mullaloo. PHEW !!!! Devon and Tanyn then flew to the airport and back to the Gold Coast to resume their own busy training and work/ Uni schedules.

The clinics were exceptional and so much was learned by athletes, coaches and age group managers, which is exciting given that the season is about to begin!

Huge thanks to the City of Joondalup for enabling this amazing opportunity to go ahead!

Congrats SRC Group 1!

Congratulations to the club’s newest lifesavers – a group of 26 young members were assessed at Mullaloo on Saturday 16 September, for their Surf Rescue Certificate, which now makes them eligible to join the club’s patrolling members and also to pursue further awards.

The group were trained to a high standard by Simon Gidley (Lead Trainer) and his team which included Mark Hills, Carlo and Tracey Tenaglia and Alistair Cook. Thanks also to the regular water safety members Annika, Corey and India-Rose.

The Assessors included Sandy Clarke (Assessor In Charge), Bernie Flint, Mark Hills, Jacquie McGregor and Anne-Marie Widermanski.

Skills Maintenance

requalDates for the diary

Here they are – with a new “look”. It has been decided to split the requalification program between Dry and Wet skills – due to the large numbers we have. It will be important to register for your preferred session – so we can make sure we have sufficient Assessors (and Trainers) to ensure an efficient session. There is also a mix of weekday evenings (Dry sessions) and weekends (Wet sessions).

Members who are unable to attend within the dates listed due to work or travel commitments are requested to advise the Education team without delay – so alternative arrangements can be worked out.

Skills Maintenance areas to be covered at the sessions listed below will be Bronze Medallion, Surf Rescue Certificate and Advanced Resuscitation Techniques. Each session will commence with an overview of changes, with an opportunity to practice, before participating in a series of scenarios – similar to last year.

  • DRY: Monday 9 October, 6pm to 9pm
  • WET: Sunday 15 October, 1pm to 4pm
  • DRY: Wednesday 18 October, 6pm to 9pm
  • WET: Saturday 21 October, 1pm to 4pm
  • DRY: Wednesday 25 October, 6pm to 9pm
  • WET: Saturday 4 November, 8am to 12pm

IRB Skills Maintenance will be provided as a separate program, due to the increased requirement to demonstrate negotiating surf five times.

  • Sunday 8 October, 1pm to 4pm
  • Saturday 14 October, 8am to 11am
  • Sunday 5 November, 1pm to 4pm

The plan has been designed to avoid the busy period of late November and December – as members are busy finishing their work/school year, and also getting ready for the Christmas season.
