The Board and Management have agreed that membership fees for the 2017/18 will increase slightly ie. between $10–20 for the year depending on your membership category. This increase is the first rise in membership fees in 5 years and is necessary for several reasons, including:

  • Rising Costs – our Club incurs operating costs that are increasing significantly, such as electricity rising from about $13,000 to $22,000 per year;
  • Finishing Refurbishment – we have some large sums yet to pay to finish the fit out and completion of the refurbishment, such as about $50,000 for an electricity upgrade and $42,000 for the final payment to the builder; and
  • Delayed Rent – the opening of the restaurant (expected in September or October) has taken much longer than expected due to delays in the tenant being granted their liquor license.

While efforts are being made to pursue alternative income, such as hire of the Club rooms, sponsorship and fundraising, these are not likely to fully cover the expected increase in costs for this year.

Value for money?

So, what do you get for your membership fees? The Club continues to strive to deliver value to our members, including:

  • new club room facilities. This was achieved without charging you a ‘building levy’. Yes, the Club rooms are a bit bare at the moment, but we’re working on making it feel like ‘home’ again gradually as funds allow.
  • service in life saving. Our Club offered a full array of opportunities to 1,869 members last season, making us the second largest Club in WA with the largest number of juniors at 656. Our service to members spans all facets of surf life saving activities, including education, patrol and nipper and surf sports development with professional management and equipment.
  • contribution to community. As a member of our Club, the value you receive can be measured by your contribution to the community. Through our collective volunteer efforts, your community is a happier, healthier and safer place to live.

The Club is also pursuing several initiatives to build our capability and service to members. These include the Technology Committee investigating the application of technology such as online re-registration and payments, the Membership Structure Committee investigating options to diversify and enhance the Club’s membership offer and groups exploring opportunities to improve member well being.

The Board and Management thank you for your continuing support and volunteer contribution to your Club.
