Surf Boats

Ever seen those row boats crashing through the waves? Wondered what a thrill it would be? Well, surf boat rowing can be a ‘full contact sport’, but be assured, you’ll have a lot of preparation before you carve through your first wave.

At Mullaloo, we have a range of surf boat squads to suit your standard, starting with our ‘Development Squad’, designed to instill good rowing technique, safe boat handling procedures and appropriate base level fitness and strength. Our accredited coaches will introduce you to rowing through the dreaded rowing machine (the ‘ergo’), then progress to sheltered water (Hillarys Marina) rowing and build to some flat ocean boat sessions. This will be complimented by strength and cardio-fitness work, all blended with the good humour and team spirit famous of ‘boaties’.

Mullaloo also offers high standard male and female boat rowing squads in junior, senior and masters categories conducted by our expert sweeps/coaches who have competed and medalled at State and National level. These crews have access to our competition boats and equipment as well as proven training programs that incorporate specialist ‘ergo’, gym and boat components.

So, if you’re a bit of a thrill seeker, have the dedication and heart and are prepared for a great laugh along the way (you got to laugh at having to hoick your bathers up your butt), then you’re going to fit in just fine with the Mullaloo boaties!!!

The Race

Starting on the beach, the crews jump into their boats and row out through the break and out to the turning buoys around 400M out to sea. After turning the buoys, they row for the beach catching any wave they can, finishing on the shore line.

Divisions of surfboat racing include Open Men’s and Women’s, Reserves, U23 Men’s and Women’s and U19’s. There are also several Masters Divisions. You must be 16 years or older to compete in a surf boat.
