Mullaloo Lifesaving
Mullaloo Surf Lifesaving Club is a very large club situated in the northern suburbs of Perth. We work in a very close relationship with the City of Joondalup and Surf Lifesaving Western Australia to provide a lifesaving service for 6 months of the year. Our patrol season starts on the first weekend of October and continues until the last weekend in March. We patrol each weekend and public holidays as well. Xmas day is the exception where it is voluntary patrol. (I must say it has proven to be the most popular patrol of the whole season!). There is a midweek lifeguard on duty from 0600 to 1800 hours each weekday during the hotter months from December to March. Voluntary patrol times vary because of demand and weather patterns and the months of the season.

Our area of patrol is 4.7 km’s of beach from Pinnaroo Point to the south and Mullaloo Point to the north of the club rooms.

Every proficient bronze medallion (BM) holder is allocated to a patrol and it is his or her obligation to be part of a patrol once gaining his or her lifesaving award. Some members have earned the right to not have to attend patrols. This means they have completed at least 10 years of active patrol service to have this exemption. This is a fantastic achievement.

It is a requirement from SLSA that if you’re aged between 15 years to 28 years you have to obtain your bronze and complete patrols to be a member of the association.

We have 11 patrols that provide the service to the community. Our patrol captains are Chez Astone, Estelle Bradley, Barbara Carter, Ric Corkill, Steve Dargie, Tony Greenfield, Chris Hainsworth, Peter Kokkeler, Andrew Manning, Kathryn Murray and Carl Young. These highly experienced and skilled lifesavers are responsible of the safety of beach patrons each rostered patrol session with a dedicated group of lifesavers. Each patrol is allocated 9 or 10 rostered patrols for the whole season.

Surf Rescue Certificate (SRC) holders of which there is many are only allocated to a patrol by request. Some SRC’s gained their award to help provide water safety for the juniors on a Sunday morning and at junior carnivals, which is fabulous.

Our patrol lists are on the website as is our patrol roster. Please check to see which patrol you are on. Your captain will also contact you to remind you of your patrol duties. This season you will be given a card with your patrol dates and times and relevant contact details. It is important that if you can’t meet your patrol obligations you need to let your patrol captain know or contact the Director of Lifesaving Services for Mullaloo rbcarter@bigpond.net.au. It is expected that you complete at least 24 of your rostered hours of patrol over the season and to obtain a financial reward you need to complete a minimum of 32 hours of patrol.

Last season we as a club completed over 8500 hours of voluntary patrols. A fabulous effort, especially as our responsibilities are stretched over such a distance.

So please join us on the beach in the red and yellow.

MSLSC Patrol Policy – June 2009
The following information outlines patrol requirements of Mullaloo Surf Life Saving Club, consistent with Surf Life Saving Australia policy.

1. Qualifications for full patrolling members
To be a full patrolling member (eg wear a patrol cap), members must hold a proficient Bronze Medallion (BM) or Surf Rescue Certificate (SRC). Patrol members must be proficient before 31 December; members who fail to meet this deadline are required to make alternative arrangements with the Director of Education.

2. Patrol contract
Mullaloo SLSC enters into an agreement with the local government authority, i.e. the City of Joondalup and SLSWA at the beginning of each season. This service agreement specifies the following:

  1. Days to be patrolled (Saturdays, Sundays and all public holidays except Christmas day that fall during the surf season – October to March);
  2. Area to be patrolled;
  3. Hours during which the beach will be patrolled.
3. Patrol rosters
Patrol rosters are developed at the beginning of each season and every effort is made to allocate each patrol with an even spread of rostered patrol shifts.

4. Patrol requirements
All current financial and proficient members between 15 and 28 years of age are obligated, as members of Surf Life Saving Australia, to actively participate in patrol duties. Competitors need to refer to SLSA Competition Policy in relation to patrol requirements. (Link to slsa web site).

5. Mullaloo Surf Life Saving Club patrol member categories

  • Rostered patrol member
A rostered patrol member is allocated to a patrol at the beginning of each season.
Rostered patrol members are required to be involved in either the set up or pack up of the patrol, depending on the patrol shift. In addition, rostered patrol members are expected to complete a full patrol unless specific arrangements have been made with their Patrol Captain. Rostered patrol members wishing to complete additional voluntary patrol hours must commit to a minimum of two hours during the same patrol period. Eligibility for the club patrol rebate in this category requires members to complete 75 per cent of their rostered patrol hours. This figure will be available prior to the beginning of each season.
  • Non-rostered patrol member
A non-rostered patrol member is a member who for some reason is unable to commit to a rostered patrol. Eligibility for this patrol category is by written application to the Director of Life Saving Services. Non-rostered patrol members are expected to complete a full patrol, including set up or pack up, depending on the patrol shift. Eligibility for the club patrol rebate in this category requires members to complete 75 per cent of the average rostered patrol hours. This figure will be available prior to the beginning of each season.
  • Voluntary patrol member
A voluntary patrol member is member who wishes to do extra patrol hours in addition to their rostered patrol commitments. This category also includes Life Members, Long Service Members and Active Reserve Members. Voluntary hours must be completed at a minimum of two hours per patrol.
  • Water safety member
A water safety member is a member who participates in water safety at club days and/or at surf carnivals. Eligibility for this category is that members must hold a proficient SRC or BM award. Eligibility for the club patrol rebate in this category requires members to complete a minimum of 75 per cent of the average rostered patrol hours. This figure will be available prior to the beginning of each season.
6. Substitution
Members who are unable to fulfil their rostered patrol hours are obligated to arrange a substitute with similar skills/qualifications (e.g. BM to be replaced by BM) – this means an SRC cannot substitute for a Bronze Medallion holder but a BM can substitute for an SRC:

  1. The patrol is still covered.
  2. The member does not “go down hours”
  3. If a substitute patrol member has been arranged, make up hours are not necessary. However the substitute gains the hours but does not and cannot give the patrol member the hours
7. Sunday morning additional hours
Members wishing to perform additional patrol hours on a Sunday morning may do so whilst participating in club activities at the discretion of the patrol captain, in addition, they may be required to perform water safety at the discretion of the Patrol Captain. Members participating in club activities must sign off patrol.

8. Training
Training while on patrol is at the discretion of the Patrol Captain.
