IRB Crew

Inflat­able Res­cue Boat Crew Certificate

This course pro­vides the oppor­tu­nity for mem­bers to develop skills and knowl­edge required to be a safe and effec­tive crew per­son in an inflat­able res­cue boat (IRB).

The course is con­ducted by the club for fur­ther infor­ma­tion please con­tact the Direc­tor of Education.

Pre­req­ui­sites

To enter the IRB Crew Cer­tifi­cate course you must have met the fol­low­ing course pre-requisites.

  • Be a finan­cial mem­ber of Mul­laloo SLSC for the cur­rent season
  • Min­i­mum of 15 years of age on the date of final assessment
  • Hold the SLSA Bronze Medallion

Course Out­comes

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

Under­stand the roles and respon­si­bil­i­ties of an IRB Crewperson

  • List the duties of an IRB Crewperson
  • List the safety con­sid­er­a­tions when crew­ing an IRB

Crew an IRB

  • List the dif­fer­ent classes of IRB’s
  • Iden­tify the com­po­nents of an IRB and ancil­lary equipment
  • Con­tribute to the safe and effi­cient launch­ing of an IRB
  • Demon­strate safe crew­ing posi­tions while nego­ti­at­ing the surf
  • Per­form emer­gency procedures
  • Obser­va­tions, haz­ards and risks are iden­ti­fied and clearly com­mu­ni­cated to the driver

Main­tain an IRB

  • Per­form pre-operational checks and pre­ven­ta­tive main­te­nance of the IRB hull
  • Per­form post-operational main­te­nance of the IRB hull
  • Report major wear or dam­age accord­ing to organ­i­sa­tion procedures

Per­form res­cues in an IRB as a crewperson

  • Per­form con­scious and uncon­scious casu­alty pick-ups
  • Per­form com­plex res­cues includ­ing swim­ming res­cues, sail­boarder and kite surfer rescues.

Requal­i­fi­ca­tion

Mem­bers are required to requal­ify this award annu­ally. Requal­i­fi­ca­tions take around 1–2 hours to com­plete and are con­ducted at the club.
